So I actually managed to find a pretty cute dress at Macys.com, though it was probably not worth what I paid even on sale. The fit was crazy, as it was for a couple other things I returned, but I liked it so I decided to order one in a different size and compare the two. They sent me a size M shirt instead. I emailed, of course, expecting them to say "so sorry, ship it back at no charge and we'll send you the right thing." I mean, this is Macy's, right? It's supposed to be reasonably high-end.

Nope -- they just explained to me how returns worked, and that I should ship the item back (at my expense). Even if I wanted to pay to fix their mistake, I have the wrong receipt -- it reflects the thing I ordered -- so I sort of needed them to acknowledge that they fucked up, and told them so. The second person who wrote me back seemed to get it. I gratefully supplied more information. The third person... explained to me how returns worked. They also told me their records showed that they sent me the right thing, but if I "felt" it was wrong, I could ship it back at my expense.

So here I have something that is not the same item, size, size type, or type of garment as what I asked for, and Macy's customer service refuses to help, and I have to get my credit card company involved. The funny thing is, this has happened to me before with Macy's -- my mom ordered a size 16 tweed skirt as a present and I got a size M flowered ruffled blouse. I have to say that the particular experience of getting a thing that was not even remotely related to what I ordered is not something that I've had anywhere else. So thanks for that unique experience, Macy's, and fuck you.

Macy's can be a real goldmine for inexpensive, decent quality, plus sized fashion, but there are certain caveats. A few tips:

-Wait for the sales. They want to get older items off the floor as quickly as possible, so if you see something you like that costs too much, wait a month and look on the sale/clearance racks; paying full price at Macy's is for suckers.

-The store brands vary wildly in quality. For some reason, almost all Style&Co stuff is horribly made, but you can find some beautiful classics in the Alfani line. INC is hit or miss; they follow the big obvious trends, which can be good or bad depending on the season (one season, masses of gaucho pants, the next, swing jackets, etc).

-The main reason one would choose Macy's is price + selection, but again it varies by region. Hit the biggest store in a big city for the really good stuff (Herald Square in New York, State Street in Chicago, there's a good one in Los Angeles but I can't remember the location).

I am a stylist in nyc and have worked in the industry roughly 5 years as designer & celebrity assistant previously, not that makes me an expert on determining crap though, because any idiot could see that the garments on display at Macy's for lack of a better word...Suck. And you know why? Because Macy's womens wear BUYERS SUCK. Yes- & I personally view too many line sheets for too labels carried by Macy's & I find it odd, sad, & disgusting that with so many beautiful clothes that Macy's could be carrying, a shopper (who knows dick about fashion) will cringe in horror whilst browsing the racks.

Ahh yes once again it all comes down to the buyers, you see Macy's buyers hand pick each item from each label to actual carry in the store by using their oh-so-trendy & uber spectacular taste of course. I thought that it was awesome that not one item that most sales teams tried to push for spring this year (or wasn't total crap-wear) were actually purchased by the Macy's buyers. I mean Macy's doesn't exactly have that designer rep and all but hey - its decent...and it sure as hell could be better. The buyers either have horrible taste in general or their idea of the true Macy's customer is seriously fucked. As in the typical consumer is color blind, sparkle loving freaks sporting MOO-MOOs. Seriously as a stylist and as a fashion enthusiast - I seriously can not take another year of shapeless dresses for yes- bigger individuals...that is the only customer that would beneifit from a shapeless type shirt - oh & cool and for like the 6 year in a row now if you so unfortunatly happen to actually not be fat you can wear a sweet-ass belt and accessorize with more Macy's junketeers. SO of couse theres always that to look forward to as well.... THANK YOU MACY'S FOR HANDS DOWN WORST COLLECTIONS THIS SPRING - I REALLY DIDN'T THINK IT COULD BE THAT BAD - TOP NOTCH GUYS!!
OH AND LEAST I FORGET - CHECK OUT THEIR WINDOW DISPLAYS OVER ON 34th - PRETTY BAD EVEN FOR A 3-YEAR-OLD TO HAVE CREATED - 3 UGLY "DRESSES?" HUNG CROOKED ON 3 DINGY MANNEQUINS SPACED UNEVENLY, SOME 70s authentic real macy's burguandy carpet complete with stains...and to top it off 3 tacky & dangerously looking lights dangle above with wires on display for that pop of grey colour. I must say this window display did get my attention, so bravo to that proud decorator, mission accomplished- passer- bys stop in street in horror. Oh but it does drawn in a certain chavvy cool junior whore customer which I'm sure was the target, so once again mission accoplished. Macy's officially sucks...its too bad because with different product selection (nixs the womens buyers asap!!) and a little work on that window display and HEY NOT SO CRAPPY ANYMORE - HMMM GREAT IDEA.....I HOPE THE RIGHT PERSON READS THIS & GETS A CLUE - GOOD LUCK!!!

I love the INC line and I love that there are trendy well made clothes in the women's section. It's just WAY too expensive for me at this point in my life! But I always check the clearance and Macy's always has great quality clothing and outerwear that will last.

When it comes to Macy's, it really depends on who the women's clothing buyer is for that store. I have seen some Macy's womens sections with very dowdy clothing. I have seen others with a larger variety of cute, trendy clothing. Some Macy's even have a small women's store next to the regular Macy's store (these stores tend to have the best selection of trendy clothes).

The prices can be a bit high, unless you get something on clearence, but the quality is typically very good.
